in recent years, there has been a lot of exciting stuff happening in the russian house scene. established names, but also, a string of new talent have been making waves upon waves with some of the deepest tunes around. one of the prime examples of this are the productions of the progressive and talented producer kirill tipo. a saint petersburg native whos set to make his vinyl debut on our third release with a 3 track ace compilation entitled >believe in rhythm<

on this white label, we bring together two of the best producers in the uk to give there perspective of the work of sbtrkt. the ratio of quality to quantity in the braiden repertoire is disproportionately weighted in favour of quality. his debut release >the alps<, on joy orbisons label doldrums, certified him as a meticulous detailed producer. if youve heard is rinse fm show, youll have enjoyed the intensity and breadth of his perspective. this musicological take on sbtrkts >pharaohs< recontextualises roses gabor afro-futuristic vocals line in a more genuinely space-age industrial club sphere. the darker edge to lil silva is just the baddest of all uk house producers. his uk funky background has sheltered him from the hype lauded upon the flavour of the month post-dubstep producers of his generation. as a result, hes continued to garner respect from all sides, from the garage scene to the tech house scene. his treatment of >living like i do< takes his mate samphas vocal and adds a jerk discord to an already tense and dramatic vocal performance. his trademark 2-note bassline presents itself with its usual menace, ensuring waistlines to react promptly.

another city now is the debut ep from ango aka andrew gordon macpherson, the next fresh voice hailing from montreal, canada on the luckyme label. a frequent collaborator with jacques greene, lunice & nycs azealia banks, now is the time for ango to step out alone. over this 6 track narrative - written on the road whilst touring in january 2011 � one hears late 80s pop, early 90s house and contemporary rnb arise in equal measure. every bit the writer as he is the producer, this record is a lyrically polarised selection of girl songs expressing the giddy way up and the painful way back down. but theres something defiantly warm in angos music that serves as a refreshing antidote to 2011s endlessly morose electronic music. where polysynths and hi hats spring above plates of live processed vocals, chopped samples are harmonised upon, punctuated with thumping drums. another city now is a balanced record: upbeat and deep, vintage and yet totally modern, as heart aching as it is uplifting. our tenth record is something special.

ruede hagelstein wants it all, and not just that jazz. the berlin producer, known for his productions that straddle the boundary between house on techno, released on labels like souvenir and upon you records, will release his debut album soft pack together with his band, the noblettes on november 18, 2011. a priori is the first track on the indie-electronic lp, and cannot claim itself free from jazz influences. with piano, a horn section, and brushed snares, the track swings with the best of them. since ruedes vocals also require something a little more dancefloor-friendly, this digital appetizer will be served up with a remix from the man himself. the vinyl will follow with remixes from guillaume & the coutu dumonts, noir and tiefschwarz.

the outside agency and sei2ure had never collaborated until this release, and in retrospect they were most likely doing the world a favor. the simple reason for this is that the two monsters theyre letting loose upon the world on this release can only be described as extremely dangerous. the outside agencys signature hard-hitting kicks and drum & bass percussion combine with sei2ures hard-hitting everything to provide weaponry for the next two millennia. this is definitely one of the most hardcore releases on one seven five thusfar. guaranteed to work on any dancefloor it finds in its path as per usual. no negotiating. no hostages.

this fall dumb unit returns with what is sure to become a household name in electronica: thomas feriero aka avatism. known recently for his moody releases on labels such as mike shannon s haunt and tiefschwarz s souvenir, his dark yet hopeful productions are already receiving plaudits by some of the scenes top artists. opening the doors to new musical members has not been a common occurrence at du which therefore means that this release must be something special indeed. and it is. dark, brooding yet full of energy and substance. all tracks hit with a welcome hint of catchiness and hooks embracing what is current in dance music today, without losing sight of the label or the artists individuality. 4 quality tracks of equal stature command full attention on this ep. one of the the labels most exciting releases to date and one which signifies a strong 2012 ahead!

in its original form, holy ghost!s debut album cut >hold my breath< is, pure and simple, great dancefloor electronic pop, in the hands of shadowy duo tiger & woods, the song has been totally reshaped and refracted through 80s r&b radio. they have slowed the pace and inserted synth-funk hot flashes that recall prince � and, no kidding, the time, and jimmy jam & terry lewis � to create a mood that fits comfortably (and pleasurably) within their future boogie m.o. cosmic kids ron poznansky and dan terndrup have taken the track in a more tensely dramatic direction. it might be the vaguely darkened synthline upon which much of that track sits that lends itself to its more intense feel here, and gives it such a pleasant nocturnal feel. finally, theres falty dls re-envisioning, which goes down awfully smooth for a track so full of the big, thick, bumping bass beats. it�s an aural pleasure to find yourself dreamily lost in the brooklyn, new york producer/djs halls of reverberating sound.

there is a certain dynamic that emerges whenever andre galluzzi and dana ruh pair up to create a record. with last year s >freya / mauersegler< split ep on ostgut ton, the two have already hit up some of the most prestigious labels in the electronic music landscape. tracks that are upbeat, driving, and, most of all, fresh have characterized their co-productions, which now have aras as a home. taking its cues from their label nights at berlin s panorama bar, galluzzi and ruh have solidified aras into an imprint based around expanding upon the creative energy that both share. their first release, >trambolla<, harmonizes each artist s approach into a grooving whirlwind that showcases their ability as producers as well as live musicians.starting off with the title track >trambolla<, the ep begins with tribal beats and infectious arrangements that seamlessly build upon each other along the course of the a-side. grooving from the start, it is the kind of track where the listener or the dj gets into the vibe right away. the percussion of >trambolla< especially stands out amongst the latin-tinged bongos, hi-hats, and hand claps that interchangeably come in and out of the track, a journey of its own at 9 minutes. >thelema<, the b-side, contrasts with the lightness of the a-side and demonstrates galluzzi and ruh s equal comfort in creating darker and heavily pounding tracks. the ten minute track grows out of a simple beat and growls ever louder as it takes in more intensity with its cascade of filters, delays, and booming bass. aside from the hard edge of >thelema<, it also provides a preview into the live set that the two artists are about to debut together.

if you have ever heard a crunching roland system 100 bass line ringing in your ears at 5.00am in the morning, there is a good chance that it has been written by andy meecham. whether as emperor machine, sir drew, chicken lips or even bizarre inc his music rolls and waves in incredible ways and sheds light on all the probable combinations of familiar sounds. morning banger is certainly a hot potato! upon the first listen you are hooked in with the slightly aggressive korg delta drawing you in. the track builds and builds into a crescendo of beautiful tension and before you know it your brain is eagerly awaiting the next step of the journey.

dent may recorded >fun< and >wedding day< at hits inc., his home studio at the infamous cats purring dude ranch in oxford, mississippi. expanding upon the smooth pop sound he introduced on last years >that feeling / eastover wives< single on forest family, dent ditches his ukulele in favor of cosmic synths, funky guitars, analog drum machines, loopy bass lines, and massive vocal harmonies. this is his second release on paw tracks, who put out his debut lp the good feeling music of dent may and his magnificent ukulele in 2009.

with the upcoming release of her debut ep warn-u, tri angle is extremely excited to introduce ayshay. born in senegal, raised in kuwait and now living in new york city, fatima al qadiri is the producer and vocalist behind ayshay. fuelled by her fascination with the sacred songs of islam warn-u is a homage and reinterpretation of the sounds that have haunted al qadiri since she was a child. constructed entirely out of her own vocals, which she filtered and layered upon one another warn-u is al qadiris attempt to reconfigure the concept of sacred music as inspiring divine love and divine fear. even in her adoption of the name ayshay, a flippant term which means whatever in arabic, fatima al qadiri seeks to distance the austere values inherent in worship music from her own interpretation of the latter.

so we went predominanlty stateside for our last outing, and decided to bring things back home this time. hoya003 is a strictly uk affair. opening up on the a-side is one of rudest producers and djs the uk has going for it. this aint a comment on her manners though, they are as impeccable as her production. after ikonika sent us a zip of some hoya potentials, we just knew >fleas< had to be the one featured on this 12 inch. a more sinister, rolling, emotional jam, it still packs as much as punch as ikonikas dj sets. kicking off the b-side is the homie om unit. now, this guy � this guy. are there any superlatives left to desribe his sonic masterpieces that have rocked too many dancefloors and had as many producers scratching their heads and re-assessing their mix-downs? an instant favourite, >fibonnaci 10< was one of the earliest cuts lined up for a release and when you listen you will see why. this guy. seriously. bringing things to a close, we hand over to one of our favourites from the flourishing cardiff scene. why doesnt monky have more music out? is one of those questions that has been asked too many times for our liking. so much so, we may have to take it upon ourselves to change that. but, for now, just enjoy >hipster<. a killer synth-laden nod to early ukg, but looking forward as opposed to sideways. enjoy.

for alec koone, the 20 year old, pennsylvania resident, who was 19 and based in new york at the time of his first release, >wander / wonder< is a coming of age album that sees him expand upon the unique sound that attracted him so much attention to begin with. in koone s own words: it s an open ended album, and i think individuals should make their own meaning of it so that it is something actually real to them. it s not classical music, but in the tradition of a classical work like a bach cello suite, i see it as more of a whole musical piece with themes/motifs/ideas reoccurring throughout, connecting the tracks together as opposed to simply being a collection of songs that sit next to each other in isolation. it s also an album that should be listened to loudly. wander / wonder is a mysterious and genuinely haunting record that seems to exist in a world all of it s own making, balanced between the ecstatic wonder referenced in the title and something altogether more indefinable and uncertain of itself, like shards of light flickering through a blanket of fog, and even though wander / wonder is undeniably an electronic album, it feels strangely organic, rooted in nature, synthetic textures and distorted voices harmonizing with an ever present oceanic shimmer. wander / wonder was written and produced by alec koone in new york and pennsylvania. mixed by alec koone and sam haar (member of blondes) in new york city.

charted by ernesto ferreyra. this ep is inspired by an egg dropping contest that was held at the hotel vancouver when i was a kid. all maner of apparatus were designed to help the eggs land safely after falling the 17 floors. all failed but one. parachutes malfunctioned. ballons drifted into obstructions. wings collasped. the winner: a jar of molasses. the egg was pushed into the center of a large jar full of the thick liquid and the jar was thrown over the side. the jar broke on the street below leaving the egg safe and sticky. i was once told that all jokes come from prison. i often think of those doing time while trying to remember some play on words like - whats the difference between a pickpocket and a peeping tom?..... - though that is one of redd foxxs gems i have a new joke i have yet to use - upon exiting a bathroom, regardless of its particular plumbing, tell the owner that you think their bidet is broken

this new ep from j. phlip fits that description nicely. deep and dirty with filthy ghetto sample drops. in the 1840s a certain neighborhood in san francisco was nicknamed, the barbary coast. it was described as -the haunt of the low and the vile of every kinda dance-halls and concert-saloons, where blear-eyed men and faded women drink vile liquor, smoke offensive tobacco, engage in vulgar conduct, sing obscene songs and say and do everything to heap upon themselves more degradation, are numerous.- lots of people think they know about sf basslines but only a few actually can pull it off. jessica is one of those people. she is one of my favorite djs on earth and her new ep shows why she fits in so well with at dirtybird. big basslines, quirky ideas, and a general sense of mischief make this ep stick out from all the matchy matchy tracks out there.

further to motor city drum ensembles dj kicks compilation, his exclusive single l.o.v.e. has been reworked by the young detroit prodigy kyle hall, the painter and music creator wolfgang voigt and an excellent remix by smallpeople. kyle has been highly influenced and captivated by the underground deep house sound of detroit. inspired by artists such as theo parrish, mike huckaby, rick wade, 3 chairs, kdj and omar s, who believe their music has a certain feeling of the advant garde and liberation from the so-called rules people place upon dance music. kyle took that principle of their music and applied it to music that he was trying to create. wolfgang voigt is known for his numerous, nearly inexhaustible list of one-off projects and aliases. of these, his best known is arguably >gas< a project that saw the marriage of ambient music and 4/4 techno. his remix of motor citys l.o.v.e shows his minimalistic approach to music he has been famed for worldwide. smallpeople are julius steinhoff & just von ahlefeld aka dionne. smallpeople are focused on a wider range of music and can be diverse- between deep house, detroit techno and some chicago flavours but always within the balance of atmospheric warmth and club suitability bringing yet another perfect addition to this remix package. watch out for more big tunes from smallpeople in the near future

one of vahagns best friends (tiago from dfa, clearmont 56, golf channel, etc), has a residency at lisbons top club lux called trust. after attending one of these trust nights, this lisbon-based armenian musician arrived in his studio right after the club night and wrote the original material for this record in the course of a few hours. the result was so special, that soon groovement had it signed upon hearing, and contacted tiago to be the remixer for the track dedicated to him. a record with a story like this is bound to be good!

reissue - cass mccombs, singer-songwriter born in northern california in 1977 and currently residing somewhere in that state, is set to release wit�s end, his fifth-and-a-half album and third on domino, on april 11th. the result of two years recording in various homes and studios in california, new york, new jersey and chicago, wit�s end was produced by cass with ariel rechtshaid, with whom he also created catacombs.sounds that conjure the colors purple and black, this is his darkest record to date. it seems he is going deeper into the mania of a man buried alive inside his self-made catacombs, banging the stone walls, crying to be let out, and enjoying the quiet away from the outside world. however, he is not a man afraid of his own shadow, for in this environment of complete darkness, no shadows can be cast. this is a world of total feeling. here, words become a catalyst away from the slavery of arbitrary thought and toward feeling.
